Armed robbers committed 9 robberies on the west side of Chicago in just 1 hour. The windy city continues to face an ongoing surge in crime, due to which residents have already begun to perceive violence and robberies as “quite commonplace.”
According to local TV channel WGNTV, robbers in a black SUV are suspected of 9 robberies committed between 6:12 and 7:26 a.m. last Friday.
“It’s scary to go to work and think about being robbed, but it’s common in this area,” Anthony Castro, a local tire repair worker, told the publication.
Employees of the store that was the victim of a robbery told the publication that this was the first case of an attack on the store in five years since its opening.
“I try to be aware of what surrounds me as much as possible, but such things are unpredictable,” Castro said. “You don’t know when it might happen, but again, never think that it won’t happen to you for sure, because you can’t be sure.”
The data shows that last year the crime rate in Chicago increased sharply, and the number of murders reached a record high.
According to the Chicago police, in 2022, the number of reports of robberies has increased dramatically by 15%. Robberies increased by 11% from 2020 and 2019, but decreased by 10% compared to 2018.
